The Markham Waxers rebounded in fine fashion to Monday's overtime loss as they
defeated the Oshawa Legionaires 8-1. A repeat of last year's first round
of the playoffs, Oshawa came out flying and took the play to the Waxers for
most of the opening frame. Nick
Kemp was sharp in net during the first ten minutes keeping the score 0-0
until the other Waxers could get rolling.
The Waxers struck first with just under five minutes left in the
opening frame and the first period would end 1-0. On the power play, Jesse
Boucher passed the puck across the ice to Albert
Ferrante at the point. Ferrante's blast was stopped by the Oshawa
netminder and the rebound went directly on to Ryan
Steane's stick and he buried a backhand in to the open side of the net for
the lead.
Markham blew the game wide open in the second period scoring 5 times. Mark
Menonte scored the eventual game winner, his first of two in the period,
with assists to Mark Mitchell
and Kemp. After an Oshawa dump in that Kemp steered to Mitchell, Menonte
was found with a great pass at the far blue line behind the Oshawa defense and
made no mistake on the breakaway, 2-0 Waxers. One minute later, just over
9 minutes in to the period, Jason
Duffy and Ben Cottreau
broke free on a 2-on-1. Duffy fed the pass across to Cottreau who
corralled the pass with his skates, kicking the puck up and batting it in to
the net out of mid-air with his stick for his second of the year. Then,
four minutes later while short handed, Menonte scored his second, another
breakaway and almost a carbon copy of his first. Boucher had jumped on a
loose puck near the Waxer blue line and fed Eric
Kleine who banked the puck off the boards to the streaking Menonte.
Then, with just over 2 minutes remaining, Steane, Boucher and Menonte went in
alone 3-on-0 with Menonte leading the rush. In an unselfish move, Menonte
deked the goalie to one side then slid the puck back to Boucher who tapped it
home for the 5-0 lead. Pat
Porretta finished the scoring after Duffy and Cottreau started the cycle,
Porretta stepped out from the corner with the puck and rifled home a low
wrister just 33 seconds after Boucher's goal.
The third period saw the Waxers extend the lead to 8-0 just over 8 minutes
in. Mitchell made a great play in the neutral zone to break up an Oshawa
break out and immediately moved the puck to his partner, Ferrante. He
streaked up the ice and let go a low, hard slapper from just over the
blue line for his first goal of the season. Then, while on a power play,
Porretta and Cottreau combined to set up Duffy for a one timer in the slot and
the final Waxer goal of the evening.
Kemp stopped 28 shots on the evening, the only shot getting past coming with
just 1:15 left on the clock, earning his second win for the Waxers.
