Any time these two teams meet it seems to be an exciting game and Monday's
contest between the Waxers and the Wexford Raiders did not disappoint. A
coach killer because of the score, it was a fast paced, smooth skating, rough
and tumble game that the fans in attendance enjoyed. In the end however,
the home squad went home shy of the two points as the Raiders won in overtime.
The first period started off in Wexford's favour as they lead 2-0 scoring
just under 11 minutes in to the game and then with just under 3 minutes left in
the period. The Waxers cut the lead in half with just 36 seconds left
when Jason Young scored his first of the year.
Derek Doucette kept the
puck in at the line and Paul Robinson cycled the puck behind the net to Young
who went around the other side and somehow banked the puck in off the goalie's
skates and make the score 2-1 entering the second period.
The Waxers wasted no time in tying the score as the struck on a powerplay
just 49 seconds in to the middle frame. Jesse Boucher fed
Pat Porretta at
the point and his low slapper was deflected in to the cage by Ryan Steane who
was parked in front. Markham then ran in to penalty trouble and saw the
Raiders jump ahead 4-2 scoring on a 5-on-3 and subsequent 5-on-4 powerplays
just over 1 minute apart. The Waxers cut in to the lead with 5:45 left on
the clock as Boucher ripped home a slapper from the top of the circles for a
4-3 score. Porretta and Steane picked up assists on the powerplay
marker. Wexford stretched their lead again to two goals, at 5-3, before
Boucher, Doucette and Pat Diotte combined shorthanded to make the score
5-4. Diotte outworked 3 Raider forwards behind the net and came out with
the puck leading the charge on a 3-on-2. Moving the puck wide to Doucette
as they crossed the blueline, Doucette froze the Wexford D and then fed a
perfect pass to Boucher driving to the net back door for the goal. The
period ended 5-4.
Early in the third, Wexford ran in to penalty problems of their own and the
Waxers capitalized. Having back-to-back 5-on-3 powerplays, Markham scored
twice and surged ahead 6-5. Porretta scored the first as Steve Nobili won
the faceoff clean back to Doucette who fed it across for a one-timer for
Porretta. Then Boucher completed his hat trick as Steane moved it to
Doucette,, he blasted it from the point, and Boucher slapped home the rebound
from an improbable angle. There was 12:35 left on the clock. Just
over 3 minutes later Wexford tied the game on a goal reminiscent of Young's in
the first period. That set the stage for overtime.
As happens so often in the game of hockey, Markham missed a great chance at
one end, the puck was turned over and Wexford streaked down the ice on a
breakaway and scored to end the game, 1 minute in to overtime. The wild
shootout came to end as the two teams combined for over 80 shots in the
game. The Waxers earned 1 point for the overtime loss and finish their
first weekend with 5 of a possible 6 points.
