The 2001-2002 regular season kicked off Friday night as the Waxers hosted the
Pickering Panthers in their home and season opener. In rematch of last
year's home opener in which the Panthers played spoiler, the Waxers exacted
some revenge winning this year by a 7-4 score.
The first period was all Markham as they outscored Pickering 2-0 and out
shot them 15 to 7. Jesse Boucher opened the scoring for the year, his
first of three on the evening, scoring a power play marker with assists to
Derek Doucette and Kevin
Cribari. Just under 4 minutes later, while playing
4-on-4, Mark Skeels and Doucette moved the puck D-to-D and then Doucette found
Cribari in behind the Panthers defense, springing him on a breakaway and a 2-0
lead.
In the second period, Boucher was responsible for all the scoring, first
staking the Waxers to a 3-0 lead on a beautiful end-to-end rush assisted by
Eric Kleine and Mark Menonte. Then while shorthanded and with the score
3-2 for the Waxers, Boucher blocked a point shot and took off on the breakaway,
deking the goalie to the backhand and roofing the hat trick goal.
Pickering's first two goals were scored 20 seconds apart on a 5-on-3 and
subsequent 5-on-4 powerplay. They scored twice in the final 4 minutes of
the period to tie the game in to the third.
The third period was much more like the first as the Waxers took over the
game, scoring the final three goals while putting 26 shots on net. With
just over 8 minutes remaining, Menonte broke the tie with a strange
looking goal from the right wing boards. As players crashed the net, the
Pickering goalie was caught in the pile and could not get back across the
crease in time as Menonte wired a shot in to the open cage a split second
before the net was knocked off its moorings. Boucher and Skeels picked up
the assists. Then just 37 seconds later, Boucher and Skeels combined to
feed Pat Poretta who deposited his first Waxer goal and upped the lead to
6-4. Then with just over 3 minutes remaining, playing 4-on-4, Kleine fed
Jason Duffy on the wall and Duffy juked his way back across the middle before
ripping a wrist over the glove of the goalie for the final tally of the night.
Nick Kemp earned his first Waxer win as he stopped 23 shots along the
way. The Waxers suffered a severe blow in the second period when Kevin Cribari
was taken from the ice after falling awkwardly in a goal mouth scramble.
It was later learned that Cribari has broken his ankle and will be out of the
line up for a minimum 4 weeks.
