WAXERS
FINISH PRESEASON WITH A TIE
Markham and Thornhill met again Saturday night and really settled
nothing as they battled to a 5-5 draw in the Rattlers' home den.
Much like Thursday night's game, the pace was quick and the game was
exciting right down to the final buzzer.
The Rattlers opened the scoring first
a little under 8 minutes in to the game. With just under five
minutes left in the period, Travis O'Rourke tied the game on a power
play marker with assists going to Derek
Doucette and Matt Roberts. Then just over a minute
later, Mark Skeels went end-to-end and finished with a nice backhand
deke to stake the Waxers to a 2-1 lead. Eric Kleine and Kevin
Cribari picked up assists. The Rattlers would tie the score
before the period ended.
Thornhill again scored the first goal
of the period, on a power play mid way through the stanza. The
lead stayed that way until Jesse
Boucher tied the score and gave the Waxers the lead all in one
shift with under 3 minutes remaining. The first goal, on the
power play saw Skeels and Doucette move the puck back and forth at the
blue line before feeding Boucher on the boards. Boucher then
dangled his way to the net, deking the goalie and stuffing it short
side as he went behind the net. Then 35 seconds later, Ryan
Steane fed Mark
Menonte on a 3-on-2, Menonte blasted a shot from the boards and
before any one could do anything about the rebound, Boucher swooped in
a slammed it home, 4-3 Waxers.
The third period saw the Rattlers
score the first 2 goals to take a 5-4 lead with 9 minutes left.
The Waxers capitalizzed on a late powerplay when Doucette dumped the
puck in to the zone and some good forechecking from Paul
Robinson caused a turnover that landed on Pat Poretta's
stick. Poretta went straight to the net and after 2 whacks at
the puck, tied the game 5-5.
Kevin Sit played the game in net for
the Waxers and stopped 38 shots along the way.
The Waxers now take time to prepare
for the regular season which opens Friday, September 14 when the
Pickering Panthers come to town.
