WAXERS COLLECT
FIRST PRESEASON WIN
The Markham Waxers made it in to the preseason win column on Thursday
night when they defeated Thornhill 4-2. A fast paced, hard hitting
game saw the Waxers and Rattlers play a more traditional game, as the
score indicates. A big change after the lacrosse/football scores of the
first two preseason games.
The Waxers got on the board first when
Corey Smith and Michael Fish combined on a pretty give-and-go play out
of the corner on a powerplay in the first period. Smith roofed a
backhander for the goal and Albert
Ferrante earned the second assist. The Rattlers tied the
game with a goal 10 minutes later and the first period ended 1-1.
Thornhill scored early in the second
on a powerplay to make it 2-1 before the Waxers stormed back to take
the lead for good. Only 43 seconds after the Rattler goal, Eric
Kleine scored on a point shot, after Steve
Nobili cleanly won the draw back to him, to tie the score
2-2. Then, just over a minute later, Fish threaded a pass
through the neutral zone to a streaking Travis O'Rourke, who swooped
in on the goaltender all alone and Derek
Doucette banged in the rebound left behind from the O'Rourke shot
for the 3-2 lead.
The third period opened 3-2 and the
Waxers added the final goal of the evening just 2 minutes in to the
period. Nobili drove wide around the Rattler defenses on a
3-on-2 break, fed a nice drop pass to Paul
Robinson, who centered to Jason
Young in front and Young roofed the puck high glove side for the
insurance marker.
Newly acquired goaltender Nick Kemp
played the entire 60 minutes and stopped 29 shots along the way.
The same two teams square off in what
will be the Waxers final pre-season game on Saturday night, September
8, in Thornhill at 7:30 pm.
