FOOTBALL OR
HOCKEY? HARD TO TELL BY THE SCORE
Well, it looks like summer is over as the Waxers played their first of
four exhibition games tonight in Brampton. A tense, defensive battle
ensued (during the warm-up that is) as the host Capitals came out on top
defeating the Waxers 9-7.
Markham showed flashes of offensive
flair, which too often were thwarted by the Brampton goalie and then
followed up by poor defensive plays which resulted in Capitals'
goals. The Waxers had to battle back the entire game, never
holding the lead, and Brampton scored the winning goal in the last
minute of play. The Capitals then added an empty netter with 12
seconds remaining for the insurance marker.
On the positive side, the Waxers
received goals from seven different players on the evening.
Trailing 2-0 in the first, Jesse
Boucher banged home a rebound after Albert
Ferrante and Mark
Menonte had created the scoring chance for Menonte. The
first period ended 2-1.
After Brampton opened the scoring in
the second, Mark Skeels cut in to the lead after finishing off a nice
centering pass from Kyle Zettler who was found behind the net by Eric
Kleine. Ryan Steane
then tied the game at 3-3 after jamming home a rebound after Boucher
and Michael Diamond had taken shots on net. The Capitals retook
the lead 4-3, but only for 5 seconds as Menonte won the draw at
center, deked one defenseman and let go a bullet shot under the cross
bar for a 4-4 tie. Brampton added on more to take a 5-4 lead in
to the third.
The Waxers tied the score early in the
third when Zettler tapped home a rebound of a Skeels slapper after Derek
Doucette lead the 3-on-2 up the ice. Again, Brampton scored
to take the lead, again, the Waxers tied the score. This time,
Diamond blasted a shot from the point on a powerplay to tie the game
at 6-6, Kevin Cribari and
Ferrante earning assists. With the score 7-6 Brampton, Pat
Poretta scored after being set up by Corey Smith to finish the Waxers
scoring and tie the game 7-7.
The Waxers will look to even their
preseason record when they host the same Brampton Capitals, Friday
night at Markham, game time is 6:30 pm.
