Markham Waxers Game Report

SOUTH DIVISION QUARTER FINALS (ROUND 1)
FEB. 8/2002 (Game 1) P1 P2 P3 OT FINAL
NORTH YORK RANGERS 1 0 0 0 1
MARKHAM WAXERS 1 1 1 0 3
The first game of the playoffs provided a sloppy, jittery game by the teams involved as Markham survived the contest and took a 1-0 lead over North York with a 3-1 victory.  Hardly a playoff game to remember, there was little intensity, even less hatred, but there was good goaltending provided at both ends of the rink.

North York got on the board first, scoring after a goal mouth scramble at the 13 minute mark of the first period.  It took just 2:25 for the Waxers to tie the game as Mark Menonte scored on a breakaway for his first postseason marker this year.  After winning the faceoff back to Derek Doucette on a four-on-four situation, Menonte streaked up the center of the ice and Doucette threaded the needle between the two defenseman springing Menonte in for a high, hard wrist shot and the goal.

The Waxers scored the only the goal of the second period, with 6:48 on the clock, which turned out to be the game winner.  Menonte intercepted a pass in the defensive zone and head manned the puck to Jesse Boucher at the red line.  Boucher carried the puck in to the zone and then feathered a pass over to Pat Porretta who joined the rush making it a 2-on-1.  Porretta's first shot was stopped but he banged home his own rebound between the goalie's legs for the lead.

Markham salted away the victory in the third scoring with 1:42 remaining when Matt Neely made a neutral zone pass to Menonte and he did basically the rest.  Driving wide on the defense, Menonte deked the man on his side of the ice and when the other defenseman stepped over, Menonte passede the puck by him to Boucher cruising in through the slot and Boucher tucked home the puck in to the wide open side.

B.J. Van Mierlo stopped 32 shots on the evening earning his first postseason victory of the year.
