Friday night the Waxers faced a good test as the Stouffville Spirit (in the midst of a real dogfight for first place in the North) paid a visit to Markham Centennial. The Waxers with a big assist to the howitzer toted by the oft-forgotten Derek Doucette (he joined the Waxers with older brother Adam, a deal that has to easily be the deal of the year). With Markham down 4-3, Derek unleashed a pair of bombs to first tie and then put the Waxers ahead for good to give the Waxers their fifth straight win.

The Waxers struck quickly when Jimmy Ball and Kevin Cribari worked the puck in the offensive zone before Cribari fed Jason Duffy at the top of the left faceoff circle, Duffy wired a wrist shot into the Stouffville cage for the game's ice breaking goal.

Stouffville evened the score shortly thereafter when a centering pass deflected off a Waxer defender's skate past netminder Rick Marnon who had zero time to react to the pinball effect.

Mark Menonte and Paul Robinson controlled play deep in Spirit territory while on a penalty kill, then just as the penalized Waxer stepped on to the ice, Menonte fed Robinson in front who made no mistake for his 14th of the year. Alex Stoyan back in the lineup after missing Thursday night's contest due to work commitments drew the other assist.

Later the Spirit scored a powerplay goal, a formidable feat for the opposition as the Waxer penalty killing units have been first class lately.

The Waxers wasted no time regaining the lead in the second period, while on a powerplay, Menonte fed Adam Doucette who waited until he had the shot he wanted and then ripped the disc home for his 31st goal of the year.

Late in the period the Spirit put together a pair of goals less than a minute apart to vault into the lead for the first and only time in the contest.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the contest, Derek Doucette ripped a bullet past the backup Spirit tender to tie the game at 4-4. Andy Schofield and South Division Most Valuable Player Kevin Tompkins earned the assists. Four minutes later Derek Doucette ripped home his second of the night, his 15th of the year from Cribari and Robert Burrows.

With time winding down and the Spirit unable to mount any real attack to gain the equalizer, Jason Young spotted an opening and slid the puck three-quarters the length of the ice for the final goal of the night.

Marnon once again gave the Waxers a solid effort between the pipes and shut the door after the Spirit gained the lead to give his club a chance to mount the comeback.

The Waxers victory was a testament to the "team first" mentality that is prevailing and the hard work that results from such an attitude. Their next game is Friday (Feb. 2) against the Pickering Panthers, a special night as the Waxers will be paying tribute to their graduating players.
