Thursday night the Waxers dominated the host Oshawa
Legionaires in a classic display of excellent team play with solid
contributions from all members of the blue and white. Tremendous forechecking
and backchecking by the forwards combined with solid defense and outstanding
netminding results in games going into the "W" column, this night was
no exception. As the contest wound down the Oshawa squad appeared to be quite
dismayed by the results.
Oshawa got it's best chance to get into the game
early in the first but netminder Rick
Marnon was up to the challenge making an outstanding stop to keep the
game scoreless. Midway through the period James
Regan fed Jason
Fraccaro with a feed to the high left slot and Fraccaro made no mistake
one-timing the pass into the Oshawa cage for the 1-0 lead. Much later in the
period Kevin Tompkins
scored his 17th of the year, a powerplay effort, from Adam
Doucette and Andy
Schofield, that goal would turn out to be the game winner.
At the thirteen minute mark of the second the
Waxers put together a pair of goals a minute apart to remove any doubt of the
outcome. Mark Menonte's
19th of the year from Patrick
Diotte made it 3-0. One minute and one second later, Steve
Nobili moved in front of the Oshawa tender and setup a great screen
allowing Jimmy Ball's
point shot to slide along the ice past the helpless keeper to make it 4-0. Jason
Duffy also assisted on the Ball marker.
Oshawa got their lone goal with three minutes
left in the frame, breaking Marnon shutout string (he had two consecutive
shutouts coming into this game), Marnon shut the door the rest of the way to
launch a new streak.
With two minutes remaining in the middle period
and the Waxers short a man due to penalty, Nobili and Derek
Doucette combined to feed Robert
Burrows with an outlet pass, fighting off defenders along the way,
Burrows went in all alone on the keeper and backhanded the disc into the net
for the final goal of the game.
It's noteworthy to point out that while all of
the Waxers enjoyed excellent performances, the return of Albert
Ferrante to the lineup was especially an eye opener. After missing many
games he returned to the ice as if he'd been born on it and in the eyes of this
writer turned in the finest game we've seen him play yet, simply outstanding.
The Waxers get no rest as they conclude this
week's schedule on home ice when they host the Stouffville Spirit who are in a
tough battle for top spot in the North Division. Game time is as usual 8:00pm.
