The Waxers traveled to Vaughan, only 24-hours
removed from posting their second straight shutout (4-0 over St. Mike's) and
played sound positional hockey for the entire night to bring home points five
and six of the weekend's schedule. Dan
Leclair was outstanding in goal and only lost his bid for his first
shutout of the year with five minutes remaining in the contest.
The first period was a less than exciting affair
as play seemed to get bogged down in the neutral zone much of the time. The
Vipers had the best scoring chance of the period when with four minutes
remaining they got a breakaway from the blueline in but Leclair made an
outstanding pad save to keep the contest scoreless through twenty minutes.
The first period saw Alex
Stoyan deliver a bone crushing hit just inside the Markham blueline and
James Regan delivered
two real nice open ice hits.
The scoring drought was finally broken up midway
through the contest on a Waxer powerplay. Adam
Doucette took the puck from behind his own goal and rushed the puck
into the heart of the Viper defense before dishing off to Kevin
Tompkins who buried the feed to make it 1-0, Jimmy
Ball picked up the other assist.
The middle period was a quicker pace but in
comparison to the opening frame anything might have been. The Waxers controlled
the play for much of the period but were only able to score just the one time.
The Waxers added an insurance marker at the
eight minute mark when Steve
Nobili ripped one home from the left faceoff circle from Derek
Doucette and Mark
Menonte. The goal came just as the Vipers were regaining full strength
after a Waxer powerplay.
With five minutes remaining in the contest the
Vipers finally broke the Waxers' weekend shutout streak at 175 minutes to cut
the lead to 2-1. Later Robbie
Burrows banked one of the boards into the empty Viper cage after they
had pulled the keeper in an attempt to net the equalizer.
Thursday the Waxers road show continues, this
time they travel to Oshawa to play the Legionaires.
