Playing for the first time in a week the Waxers put
on a demonstration of fine all-around hockey as they exploded for six goals in
the second period and shutout the Ajax Axemen by a 9-0 score at Markham
Centennial Friday night.
The first period was a fast paced game with
excellent puck movement and defensive play by both squads. The Waxers struck
for the sole goal of the period when All-Star Kevin
Tompkins grabbed a rebound to the left of the crease, with a maze of
bodies in front of the goal and the netminder down after making the save, time
seemed to stand still as Tompkins wheeled back and towards the front of the
goal looking for daylight and then lifted it into the twine, Jesse
Boucher and Kevin
Cribari drew assists.
The save of the game without question came with
about five minutes remaining in the period and Ajax got a breakaway that Waxer
keeper Rick Marnon
turned away as he did a great job of staying with the deke to preserve the
early 1-0 advantage. Clearly if that goes in the game's outcome is potentially
very, very different.
If the first period was a Waxer period by a
small margin the second period would be an all blue and white one. Andy
Schofield scored the second goal of the game just over a minute into
the period when he followed a rush by Adam
Doucette and Mark
Menonte, when Doucette's shot from the right side was stopped and the
rebound popped out to a streaking Schofield at the left faceoff circle he
quickly ripped off a wrister past the keeper who had no time to recover from
the save he made earlier.
In a curious move the Axemen changed goalies at
that point and then the roof came crashing down on top of them. Derek
Doucette fired a slapshot from the left point only to have it stopped
by the new Axemen keeper, the rebound came right back out to him and he fired
again, this time he didn't miss for his 13th goal of the year. Tompkins and Jason
Young picked up assists on Doucette's goal.
Four minutes into the period Schofield scored
his second goal, 122 seconds after he had scored earlier, Cribari and Tompkins
with the assists. Cribari then made it 5-0 just past the midway point of the
contest converting from Tompkins and Boucher.
Jason
Fraccaro who may have played his finest game of the season forced a
turnover and then taking the sole defender wide along the right wing, Fraccaro
unleashed a wrist shot that beat the netminder low to the shortside, Robbie
Burrows and Schofield with the assists. Jason
Duffy closed out the second period scoring finishing off an attack with
Young and Adam Doucette assisting.
The third period was predictably anti-climatic,
Boucher scored his 33rd of the year from Tompkins and Cribari at the seven
minute mark to make it 8-0. Then as if by script, Tompkins scored his second of
the night, 15th of the season, a shorthanded effort, from James
Regan and Marnon.
Marnon was absolutely sensational when the
outcome was still in doubt and turned aside 29 Ajax shots to earn his first
shutout since joining the Waxers. Tompkins oddly enough was ill and to prove it
he turned in a six-point performance.
Sunday night the Waxers travel to St. Michael's
to face the Buzzers, a place where Markham has found no success in recent
history.
