The Waxers traveled to Scarborough to take on the
first place Wexford Raiders and despite some bad bounces the Waxers kept
working and eventually had to settle for a 5-5 draw after outplaying the
Raiders for much of the contest.
Markham got out of the gate quickly and out
hustled the Raiders at both ends of the rink as the Waxers forced the play to
Wexford all period long. The hard work paid off when Paul
Robinson fed Adam
Doucette with a beautiful setup pass, Adam made no mistake, one-timing
the puck home for a 1-0 lead, Albert
Ferrante picked up the other assist on the opening marker. With just
over a minute remaining Jimmy
Ball scored his first goal since his injury, his fifth of the year, to
make it 2-0. Jesse Boucher
earned the first of his four points on the night with the pass to Ball who
smartly slid the puck home from the right faceoff circle.
The blue and white roll continued early in the
second, Boucher setup Kevin
Cribari who wired home his 16th of the year, Adam Doucette with the
other assist. The Raiders got a glorious scoring chance moments later when the
attacker was in on newcomer Rick
Marnon all alone from the blueline in, Marnon was up to the challenge
making a spectacular save to deny the deke attempt.
The Raiders finally got on the board to cut the
deficit to 3-1. Midway through the frame, Boucher made good on Mark
Menonte's feed from the left boards. The goal, a shorthanded effort,
was the first for the Waxers in a long, long time. The Raiders would score
again to send the teams to the second intermission with Markham up 4-2.
The Raiders scored twice by the midway point of
the third to tie the score at 4-4. With five minutes remaining in regulation
time, Derek Doucette
fed his brother Adam in the high slot and the subsequent blazing wrist shot to
the top glove hand corner put Markham back in front 5-4. Boucher picked up the
second assist on the go ahead goal, for his fourth point of the night. The
Raiders tied the game with just under two minutes remaining, a fluke goal after
a Wexford shot wide bounced crazily off the end boards.
Overtime settled nothing but the Waxers
definitely were playing for the win but couldn't come up with the winning goal.
Marnon, just in from the Bowmanville Eagles
after his acquisition shortly before game time was outstanding and made several
tough stops on good Raider scoring chances. Considering the short notice and
possible jitters in his blue and white debut he showed enough to confirm the
fact that the Waxers have themselves a top-rate netminder for the stretch run.
Friday the Waxers take on the Thornhill Rattlers
at Markham Centennial at 8:00pm.
