Saturday night the Waxers traveled to Pickering to
face the Panthers just twenty-four hours following a disappointing effort
against the Hurricanes.
The Panthers struck first and quickly, scoring
the opening goal just eight seconds from the opening whistle to take the early
lead. Eight minutes later it was 2-0. Adam
Doucette ripped home a wrist shot from inside the blue line, high to
the glove side to cut the deficit to one, Kevin
Tompkins and Derek
Doucette with the assists.
Following an early second period Panther
powerplay goal, Jesse Boucher
and Jason Fraccaro
combined for some pretty and physical work down low to create consecutive
excellent scoring chances, capped off by Boucher's wraparound to make it 3-2.
The Panthers scored late in the third period to bump their lead to two once
again.
The third period saw a much different Waxer club
hit the ice, a club that once again returned to fundamentally sound hockey,
using smart passes and short passes to trigger counter attacks and outworked
the Panthers the rest of the way.
Less than a minute in Adam Doucette potted his
second goal of the night, his 22nd of the year from Tompkins and Steve
Nobili to bring the Waxers within one. Four and a half minutes later
Mark Menonte and Paul Robinson
combined for the equalizer and it was obvious that there would be no denying
the Waxers this night. Just past the six minute mark Boucher flipped home a
rebound from the left side of the crease, converting an attack spearheaded by Patrick
Diotte and Kevin
Cribari. That would end up being all the Waxers would need with
netminder Paul Guthrie
returning to form after battling through the opening forty minutes.
The Waxer attack was relentless, and provided a
real good illustration of how stats sometimes belie the truth (the Panthers
outshot the Waxers 13-12 but the third period was a Waxer domination of the nth
degree). Midway through the period the Waxers killed off a Panther powerplay
that saw outstanding work by blueliners Diotte and Albert
Ferrante, in particular Diotte played arguably the best game of the
year, certainly his best since much earlier in the year. Shortly after
returning to full strength the Waxers scored a goal that was created entirely
by the power of the Waxer captain Tompkins. From in front of his own goal
Tompkins fed Adam Doucette at the blueline to clear the zone and then while
streaking into the offensive zone took an immediate return feed from Doucette,
powered past a Panther defender along the boards, circled behind the Panther
goal and fed Cribari the alley oop. A couple of minutes later Menonte fed
Robinson in the slot for a one-timer that didn't miss to make it 7-4, Derek
Doucette drawing the second assist. Late in the game Andy
Schofield fed Tompkins who quickly spotted a fast moving Cribari near
the Panther blueline, a nifty deke to elude a Panther defender put Cribari into
the fertile scoring grounds and he made no mistake and popped in his second of
the night to conclude the scoring.
Thursday night the Waxers begin a tough three games
weekend with a visit to Stouffville (currently in a
neck-and-neck race with the Hurricanes for top spot in the North Division).
