TOMPKINS HONOURED |

Prior to the
start of tonight's game, Waxer GM Larry
Herrington, acting on behalf of the OPJHL, presented Waxer captain
Kevin Tompkins
with a well deserved award, in recognition of his selection by the League
as the Player of the Month for November. |
The Waxers had a tough time getting any breaks and
those that they got weren't of the favourable variety during action at Markham
Centennial against the Newmarket Hurricanes.
Markham continued to rework their roster,
motivated substantially by the injury woes on the blueline and this night
featured the Waxer debut of freshly acquired Andy
Schofield.
The contest started as a physical affair, with
gritty work along the walls by both clubs and the result showed as the scoring
chances generated by both clubs were less than usual. Schofield scored his
first Markham goal with five
minutes remaining. The goal came moments after the Waxers just missed scoring,
Schofield slid the puck home with the Newmarket tender out of position from the
action moments earlier, Jesse
Boucher and Mark
Menonte earned the assists. Newmarket didn't allow the Waxers to revel
with their lead for long however, scoring the equalizer a minute and a half
later.
The rest of the contest was for
the most part one to forget for the Waxers, unable to get any bounces their way
and suffering from some unfortunate penalties the Hurricanes capitalized with
three powerplay goals en route to a 4-2 second period advantage. The Waxers got
their final goal just past the midway point of the frame, cutting the Newmarket
lead to 3-2 at the time. Boucher punched home his 26th goal of the year with
assists to Kevin Cribari
and Jason Young. The key
play on the goal was a lunging stop by Schofield at the blueline, driving
towards the boards and trapping a Newmarket clearout attempt by wedging his
skate into the boards, then regaining control after a moment to get his balance
he fired a smart pass to the right corner.
The Hurricanes would score twice
more in the final period but by then the damage had been done. The twenty shots
that were credited to the Waxers was the lowest of the season, a credit to the
winners tonight.
Saturday night the Waxers have a
chance to avenge this defeat when they travel to Pickering to take on the
Panthers.
