Friday night was a very special night for the Markham Waxers but a bigger night for the Markham Community as the Waxers hosted a special fundraising evening in support of young Joshua Franey. Joshua, a local boy, is recovering from a life threatening brain injury.

Helping the Waxers were the Olympians, former Waxer and current Maple Leaf, Steve Thomas and Joe Bowen the voice of the Maple Leafs.

The fans made all of Markham proud as they generously gave and gave again, all for a great cause and perhaps made some of us even think about life beyond the rink.

There was a game to be played as well and the Waxers came out with all cylinders firing as they took the contest to the visiting Legionaires. Bobby Fitkin opened the scoring from Kevin Tompkins and Mark Mitchell to give the Waxers the lead and it stayed that way until the Legionaires scored the lone goal of the second period in the opening minute.

Heading into the third period tied at 1-1 the Legionaires scored five minutes in to take a 2-1 lead. Two minutes later Jason Young popped in his eighth goal of the year, a powerplay goal, from Tompkins and Mitchell to even the score up. The remainder of regulation play saw no further scoring as both clubs generated excellent scoring chances but with Paul Guthrie matching the Oshawa keeper save for save the contest headed into overtime.

Forty-eight seconds into overtime Mitchell scored the game winner from Tompkins and Mark Menonte to ice the night for the Waxers in grand style.
