In the battle for first place in
the South Division the host Wexford club turned aside the Waxers as they dealt
the visitors a 4-2 defeat.
The Raiders struck first on a
fluke goal after a scramble behind the Waxer cage, that would set the tone for
the rest of the evening. Two minutes later the Raiders struck for a powerplay
marker and then added a third goal with six and a half minutes left on the
clock. The Waxers rallied late in the period to get on the board when Kevin
Tompkins (the hardest working forward the Waxers had this evening) and Mark
Menonte earned assists on Kevin
Cribari's ninth goal of the year.
The Raiders scored the lone goal
of the middle frame but it would be a long wait until the Waxers answered back
and it was far too little, too late.
The Raiders get full marks for
their victory, they came in with a sound game plan and came away with first
place and a 1-1 tie in the season series between the two rivals.
The Waxers embattled in the
first "slump" of the campaign probably have suffered from a
cumulative effect of the crazy schedule earlier and a combination of injuries
that has seen them unable to field their best lineup.
Fortunately for the Waxers they
have an experienced coaching staff and have a veteran leader that every other
team would die to get, Tompkins. This will be a shortlived downturn and the
Waxers will be putting up "W's" with regularity, the club has
gone to school and learned and experienced that nothing can be taken for
granted. The parity between clubs in this division is very evident, hard work
will separate the top clubs from the "pack".
The Waxers next face the Oshawa Legionaires on Friday night at Markham
Centennial.
Next Friday is a special evening featuring visits by Olympic
athletes from the recent Summer Olympics in Australia and Steve Thomas of the
Toronto Maple Leafs (former Waxer). The proceeds from this event will go to
help a local youngster, Joshua Franey who is recovering from serious injury.
Waxer fans, all hockey fans, come out and support a cause that transcends
sport.
