After a scoreless first period the Waxers
opened up with three goals and then swapped a pair with with the second
place Rattlers in the final period. Paul
Guthrie single handedly was responsible for allowing the Waxers a
chance to win with several outstanding stops, many in the opening frame.
Strong netminding at both ends of the rink and excellent work in the defensive
zone by both clubs kept the contest scoreless through one.
Seven minutes into the second
period the Kevin Cribari
unloaded with a snapshot from the left faceoff circle, beating the netminder
high to the blocker side for the first goal of the contest. Steve
Kelly and Kevin
Tompkins earned assists on the play. A couple of minutes prior to the
opening goal Guthrie made two outstanding stops to rob the Rattlers of sure
goals, the second of the stops was a sprawling save to deny a 2-on-1 rush by
Thornhill.
Midway through the period Patrick
Diotte crushed a Rattler against the end boards, shattering the glass.
After a 10-15 minute delay the game was resumed.
Approximately a minute after the
resumption of play Jesse
Boucher took a great pass from Bobby Fitkin
at the edge of the crease and slamdunked in his 19th goal of the
year, Jason Duffy also
picked up a helper on the 2-0 goal. With six minutes remaining in the frame Jason
Fraccaro took a Steve
Nobili feed and shot through a crowd, along the ice and slid it into
the cage to the far side after unloading his drive from the high right slot.
The Waxers increased their lead
to 4-0 early in the third period when Fitkin got his chance for a gimme after
Boucher ringed the puck off a post, leaving the Rattler netminder with no
chance on the play, Guthrie who had passed the puck up the ice to start the
rush earned the other assist on the only powerplay goal of the night by both
clubs. The Rattlers scored twice, shortly after the fourth Waxer goal and then
later with about six minutes remaining to close to within 4-2 before Fitkin
scored his second of the night from Tompkins and Boucher to conclude the
scoring. A minute after the Rattlers score to close within two Guthrie made a
big glove stop on a drive from the faceoff dot to keep the Rattlers from doing
further damage.
A measure of redemption with the
victory for the Waxers, evening up their season series with their cross-town
rivals at a game apiece. Also noteworthy was the fact that the Waxers did it
with several key players missing from the lineup due to injury.
No rest for the Waxers however,
Saturday night they head into Pickering to face the Panthers and then Sunday
conclude the weekend with a rematch against the Tigers in Aurora.
