Finally it appears that the severely compressed schedule the Waxers are in the midst of has taken it's toll. Newmarket took advantage of a tired Markham squad and earned a 3-1 victory Thursday night, in the battle of first place clubs.

The Canes scored one in the first and two early in the second to take a 3-0 lead after two complete.

The injury depleted lineup in combination with the strain of the grueling schedule appeared to prevent the Waxers from getting anything substantial mounted. With three minutes remaining Jesse Boucher fed Bobby Fitkin to cut the deficit to 3-1. They continued to press but weren't able to put one past the 'Canes keeper.

Without a doubt the heroic performance by netminder Paul Guthrie kept the Waxers in the hunt, turning away outstanding scoring opportunities time and time again. In particular Guthrie made stunning stops in the first and third periods, both clear cut breakaways.

The Waxers busy time continues in Markham Friday night when they host the Ajax Axemen in a rematch of last Sunday's game. Saturday night they conclude the merciless stretch of seven games in nine days with a trip to North York to take on the Rangers.
