The Oshawa Legionaires and Markham
Waxers faced off in a first place challenge at Markham Centennial, the Waxers
two points ahead stormed back from a 3-1 deficit and defeated the visitors 4-3
in impressive fashion.
The contest was a wide open
affair in the first period, evidenced by the high shot total, 20-15 for Markham
and the clubs exchanged a pair of goals to come out even after twenty minutes. Robert
Burrows scored his third of the year midway through the frame,
converting from Jason Young
and Brent Pollock,
flipping the puck home from a couple of feet out. With under two minutes to go
in the period the Legionaires finally solved netminder Paul
Guthrie, scoring on the powerplay to tie it up.
After the Waxers had controlled
the play for large parts of the opening period the Legionaires reversed the
tide in the second and scored twice to put the Waxers down 3-1 after two
complete.
The Waxers rebounded in the
third and while they didn't get their next goal until almost the midway point
of the period they certainly controlled the play for most of the time. Pollock
drove home a slapshot from the right point on a powerplay, assists to Kevin
Tompkins and Mark
Mitchell to cut the deficit to a single. Three minutes later Jesse
Boucher converted from Mike
Harding and Jason Duffy
to tie the score at 3-3. Just over two minutes later Duffy slid the puck home
in a goalmouth scramble, the game winner, his third goal of the year.
The contest was a very physical
affair at times, the top three hits of the night coming from Jason
Fraccaro (first period bone cruncher, open ice hit), Tompkins (first
period body slam) and Mark
Menonte (third period smash at the Oshawa blueline).
Both clubs had excellent
netminding and they were the primary factors in keeping the score as low as it
was. Guthrie made many stops on quality Oshawa scoring opportunities.
The victory proved to be a good
tonic and improves their record on the young season to 9-2. The Waxers busiest
weekend of the year continues Saturday night at Thornhill.
