Markham picked up their fifth
straight win, 3-0 over the visiting Vipers in a fast-paced and times
physical contest.
Bobby Fitkin
opened the scoring six minutes into the game when he combined with Jesse
Boucher and Jason Duffy
to give the Waxers an early 1-0 lead. The Waxers dominated play for most of the
period and ended up outshooting the visitors 15-9.
Midway through the second period
Jason Fraccaro
took a feed from Paul Robinson
and raced in for a pretty goal, from his backhand to put the Waxers up by two.
Again the Waxers outshot their opponents, 14-8.
The Vipers and Waxers were much
better matched in the final period, clubs exchanging scoring opportunities and
each receiving outstanding goaltending. The Waxers finally completed the
scoring, with just over five minutes remaining when Mark
Mitchell hit a streaking Mark Menonte,
Menonte made no mistake on the breakaway and iced the victory for the Waxers at
3-0.
Paul
Guthrie was the recipient of some excellent team defense and made
several outstanding stops to register the first Waxer blanking of the
season. The Vipers didn't play badly and were worthy opponents in what
most fans described as a highly entertaining affair.
The Waxers next host the Wexford Raiders on
Saturday (7:30pm) to finish off their opening month's schedule. Next week,
Markham hosts the Huntsville Wildcats in the first of two regular season
meetings they have in this year's schedule.
