The Markham Waxers completely dominated the
first two periods of their match with the North York Rangers, outshooting
the Rangers 43-16 after 40 minutes and then coasted to a 7-6 victory, the
score very much misleading although credit to the Rangers for taking
advantage of their chances.
Jesse
Boucher put the Waxers on the board at the eight minute mark of
the first period, his second of the year, from Bobby Fitkin and James Duffy.
The Rangers would score twice later in the period to take an almost
unbelievable 2-1 lead into the dressing room, having been outplayed by the
Waxers very badly but their netminder held them in.
After North York scored to make
it 3-1 the Waxer attack hit it's mark and often. Jimmy
Ball scored his first of the year, on a powerplay from Jason
Young and Mark Menonte
to cut the deficit to one. Less than two minutes later Paul
Robinson, also on a powerplay, scored his first from Mark
Mitchell and Mike
Harding and the score was even at 3-3. Just over a minute later Boucher
scored his second of the night, third of the year from Fitkin and Duffy and the
Waxers once again reclaimed the lead at 4-2. At the midway point of the contest
Jason Fraccaro
exploded into the clear with a shorthanded goal, James
Regan and Albert
Ferrante picking up helders. Fraccaro's goal was a just reward for some
tenacious forechecking, expect much more of this from this young man, he will
be a wanted man before the year is over.
The Waxers put two more in the
twine, a minute apart in the early stages of the third period. Steve
Kelly scored his first Jr. A goal from Robert
Burrows and Ryan Taylor
to make it 6-3. A minute later Menonte scored his third of the year from Young
and Kevin Tompkins
and the game was seemingly put out of reach at 7-3. However give the Rangers
credit, as the Waxers relaxed the North York offense woke up and poured three
across to make for a most interesting finish, far more interesting than it
should have been.
Paul
Guthrie made his first start in goal for the Waxers, with several weeks
of rust accumulated and with the play largely concentrated in the Ranger
defensive zone this wasn't the best of games for a netminder to get loose and
"feel the puck". He did make a couple of key saves late in the game
and provided a preview of things to come.
