The Waxers new season opened Friday night at Markham Centennial as the new
edition of the Markham club faced off against the visiting Pickering Panthers.
Pickering scored first to take a 1-0 lead at the five minute mark before the
Waxers were able to hit paydirt themselves. Jason
Young finished off one of several excellent scoring opportunities he
created for himself this night when he scored at the sixteen minute mark, Eric
Kleine and Brent
Pollock drew assists.
The second period saw both teams exchange a pair of quick goals. The
Panthers delivered two within a 20-second span just over three minutes into the
period. Just over a minute later Mike
Harding drove one home from the point, on a Waxer powerplay, Bobby
Fitkin and Robert
Burrows drawing the helpers. Sixty one seconds later Kevin
Tompkins finished off a rush with a goal from the left wing to tie the
game at 3-3. Harding and Mark
Menonte assisted on the tying goal.
Late in regulation time, with two and half minutes remaining, the Panthers
delivered the winning goal.
The contest was at times a sloppy affair and lacked tempo as both clubs were
tentative at times. Full marks to the Panthers for the win but the Waxers are a
much better club than they showed this night.
Dan Leclair tended
the pipes for the Waxers and was largely responsible for keeping the Waxers in
the hunt, facing too many good scoring opportunities including several clear
cut breakaways.
While nobody was overly excited with the result there is enough experience
on this club, despite the large injection of new faces, to realize that the
season is a long one. Perhaps with opening day jitters out of the way the club
will show it's true colours with a solid effort on Sunday afternoon when they
hit the ice at Markham Centennial against the St. Michaels Buzzers.
