The Waxers took control of game two of their
best-of-7 series against the Legionaires early and never really let up as they
jumped out to a 2-0 series lead after defeating Oshawa 8-1 at Markham
Centennial. The Waxers received goals from eight different skaters as Markham
continues to get high intensity performances from each player and it really
showed this night.
Jimmy
Ball rapped home the first goal of the night from about 10 feet out
midway through the first period, Alex
Stoyan and Jesse
Boucher assisted on the powerplay marker.
Eleven seconds later Robert
Burrows led a rush deep down the right wing and then made a perfect
pass to the goal mouth to the streaking James
Regan who tipped it by the Oshawa keeper to put the Waxers up 2-0.
Late in the period Mark
Menonte fanned on a shot from about 6-8 feet out, to the surprise of
everyone, including the netminder, the puck dribbled slowly the short distance
from Menonte's stick blade to the back of the Legionaire cage, Jason
Young picked up the first of his three assists on that goal.
Just over four minutes into the second period Derek
Doucette unloaded a bullet from the left point, the netminder made what
appeared to be an excellent glove save, only to see the puck fall out and
bounce across the goal line to the back of the net. Young and Adam
Doucette earned assists on the second of three Waxer powerplay goals.
At the midway point of the game while on a
penalty kill (there were many of these), Young fed Derek Doucette who took the
puck almost into the left corner in Oshawa territory before snapping a sharp
pass to Jason Duffy at
the edge of the crease, Duffy made no mistake and slamdunked home the Waxers
fifth goal.
Just over a minute later Steve
Kelly tipped home a goal mouth feed from Regan to make it 6-0, Mike
Harding with the second assist.
With five minutes remaining in the period
Boucher scored his first of the playoffs, on a powerplay, Kevin
Tompkins fed Adam Doucette who then moved the puck towards the right
corner before serving a "gimme" pass to Boucher for the tap in.
The Legionaires once again spoiled Rick
Marnon's shutout bid in the third period, this time much later in the
contest.
Adam Doucette took a Duffy pass near the Oshawa
blueline later in the period, passed quickly to Menonte who quickly returned
the pass to complete a pretty give-and-go to spring Doucette who went in all
alone to backhand home is first of the playoffs and his third point of the
night.
Despite the lopsided score Marnon was called
upon to make several difficult stops, in particular he made an almost
unbelievable stop late in the second period while the Waxers were killing off a
five-minute major.
The three hardest hits of the night came
courtesy of Mr. Alex Stoyan, it is with utmost respect and admiration for his
ability to deliver bonecrushing open ice hits that he deserves to be addressed
so formally.
Extremely noteworthy was the Waxers outstanding
penalty killing during the contest, in particular in the first half of the
contest when the outcome was still not chiseled in stone.
This is the Waxer club that streaked to it's
regular season ending tear when they took 20 of 26 possible points, this time
they did it with an exclamation point.
Game three goes Monday night at Markham (8:15pm)
start time, the Waxers have enough experience to not letup or to take the
Oshawa club lightly. If there is one thing for certain you can count on a very
unsatisfied club stepping on the ice Monday night to face the blue and white
machine.
