The Waxers defeated the Oshawa Legionaries 5-0 Tuesday night at Oshawa and
Jeremy Wenzel notched his
first Waxers shutout en route turning aside 33 shots in the whitewash.
After the contest got off to a sluggish start the Waxers came to life
in the second half of the opening period. At the fourteen minute mark Jimmy
Ball blasted one from inside the blueline into the Oshawa net to
open the scoring and give the Waxers a 1-0 lead. Unbeknownst to anyone
observing at the time this would turn out to be the game winner. Paul
Robinson drew the lone assist.
Although the second period was a scoreless affair the Waxers held a
decided edge in the play as their much improved team defense cut down on
the chances that Oshawa would see.
The final period saw the Waxers explode, as they did the previous game
against the Axemen, this time for four unanswered goals. Just before the
four minute mark Robinson converted a Greg
Chambers feed to make it 2-0. Albert
Ferrante drew the second assist. At the twelve minute mark
netminder Wenzel sprung Joel
Kitchen at the red line with a breakaway pass and Kitchen made
good on the golden opportunity with his thirteenth goal of the campaign.
Then forty seconds later the Waxers extended their lead to 4-0 when James
Regan's shot from the right wing beat the Oshawa netminder to the
far side, Alex Stoyan
and Jim Ulcar drew
helpers. A minute later the scoring was concluded when Robert
Burrows scored from Ryan
Steane and Daniel
Beaudoin.
This contest marks the tenth game in their past eleven, going back to
the final weekend of the schedule immediately prior to Christmas where the
Waxers have played solid two-way hockey.
Clearly the team has bought into the plan the coaching staff have in
place and the results are evidence of that.
Full marks to the management team who have tinkered with the roster
over the past month and have integrated newcomers who bleed blue and
white.
With the regular season winding down the Waxers have entrenched
themselves firmly into fourth place with a twelve point advantage over
their nearest pursuer.
This game also marked the first Waxer shutout for netminder Wenzel and
the first shutout for the Waxers in over two years. Wenzel is on top of
his game right now and is at this time the number one goaltender in the
League.
The Waxers next take the ice at Centennial Arena on Friday night when
they host cross-town rival Thornhill Rattlers in a key contest for both
clubs.
