Markham in it's fourth game in six nights came into Friday night's match
against the first place Vaughan Vipers and played solid fundamental hockey
to defeat the Vipers 5-3.
After defeating the Aurora Tigers and Newmarket Hurricanes before
dropping a 7-4 rematch with the 'Canes Thursday night the Waxers had their
share of physical bumps and bruises before this one started. The Markham
club turned the corner the last weekend of the regular season action prior
to Christmas and haven't looked back but were facing a Viper club that was
undefeated in their past 13 contests including 12 victories in that span.
The Vipers struck first at the four minute mark before the Waxers would
answer with a pair to leapfrog ahead. James
Regan converted the tying marker from Jason
Young and Jimmy Ball
at the seven minute mark. Then, seven minutes later the captain, Kevin
Tompkins scored his 20th of the year from Brent
Pollock and Tom
Kotsopoulos to make it 2-1. The Vipers would tie the score with a
powerplay goal late in the period and after twenty minutes the score
was 2-2.
A quick Viper powerplay goal put Vaughan in front 3-2 as the second
period got underway and then Waxer netminder Jeremy
Wenzel slammed and sealed the door shut and wouldn't allow
anything more the rest of the way. At the other end of the rink the Waxers
went to work. At 3:20 Lawne
Snyder made a beautiful pass to Daniel
Beaudoin who raced in from the red line on a breakaway and wristed
the puck into the cage to tie the score at 3-3. Two minutes later Tompkins
scored his second of the night, a powerplay effort with Ball picking up
the lone assist.
In the third period Greg
Chambers iced the victory with an insurance marker at the six
minute mark when he slid the puck towards the Viper cage from the left
corner and it caromed in behind the netminder for a 5-3 Waxer advantage.
A tremendous team effort resulted in an intensity filled performance as
the Waxers dominated the play for much of the night.
The victory proved to be particular sweet to the newest Waxers, Jason
Fraccaro (who's been impressive with his tenacious two-way play)
and Brent Pollock
(steady blueliner who's putting up some offensive numbers since arriving)
who joined the club from the Vipers in a transaction made prior to
Christmas.
Also it is worth noting that this was Tompkins' third game winning goal
in the past six days.
The Waxers next prepare to take on the Pickering Panthers on Sunday
night in Pickering. The Panthers have shown the ability to beat any club
and as too many others have found out the hard way there is no club in
this league that can be taken lightly.
