The Waxers trounced the visiting Oshawa Legionaires 8-2 at Centennial Arena Friday night. James Regan and Kevin Tompkins led the attack with a pair of goals apiece.

The Waxers struck early when a dump-in by Jimmy Ball went behind the Oshawa netminder who was taken by surprise, assisting were Pat Ferris and Ryan Steane. Five minutes later Kevin Tompkins scored the first of his two, on a powerplay with assists to Paul Robinson and Ball. The lead would extend to 3-0 when Robbie Burrows scored in the dying minutes of the opening period, drawing helpers were Jim Ulcar and Jason Young.

The second period saw more of the same although the Waxers did find themselves in the penalty box on too many occasions but once again fine penalty killing and great goaltending by Jeremy Wenzel ensured that there would be no rally. Three minutes into the period Joel Kitchen scored from Burrows and Ball. Nine minutes later James Regan scored to make it 5-0, the goal is first of two on the night was assisted by Robinson and Mike Carlesimo. After Oshawa scored on a powerplay to finally get on the board, Donald Johnson made a nice recovery after being thwarted on a scoring chance moments earlier and stuffed the puck home to make it 6-1 Markham, assists went to Lawne Snyder and Young.

The Waxers scored twice more in the final period while Oshawa countered with one. Tompkins scored his second from Wenzel and Robinson at the six minute mark to make it 7-1 at the time. Regan concluded the scoring, netting his second of the game, from Carlesimo and Wenzel. Wenzel ended up assisting on both Waxer goals of the final period, bringing to mind memories of one game last year.

Perhaps the most positive thing to take away from this game was the fact that the team played for a full sixty minutes and that they continue to receive their offence from a variety of sources, if this club continues to play hard and with a little better discipline they're going to win a lot more than they lose. This is a young club but one that is learning that hard work pays off, as it does with most everything in life.

The Waxers now continue their weekend schedule with a road game against the Pickering Panthers on Sunday night. The Panthers who have struggled mightily, however it is worth noting that they did earn their first win of the year last night and did tie the league's only undefeated team (at the time) a week earlier so the Waxers would be wise to be wary.
