Markham continued their slide as they lost a difficult 10-6 decision to the Newmarket Hurricanes. On a night of many oddities the Waxers played well enough to win but the 'Canes scored more and that's what counts in the end.

Newmarket scored first, just 14 seconds into the contest in an omen perhaps of things to come. The Waxers would recover, and recover real strong as they strung together four straight goals, three of them while on penalty killing assignments. Lawne Snyder drove home the first Waxer goal, on a powerplay, with the assist going to Kevin Tompkins. Prior to the midway point of the period Chris Petracco scored on a feed from David Colucci to start the string of three straight shorthanded efforts. Four minutes later Paul Robinson scored on a soft wrist shot that skipped of the 'Canes netminder into the cage. Just over a minute later Colucci scored from Petracco to complete the "shorthanded team hat trick" and put the Waxers in front 4-1. Half a minute later the 'Canes turned a trick of their own with a shorthanded goal. Less than a minute after the lead was halved, Tompkins flipped in a Petracco rebound on a powerplay to put Markham ahead 5-2 after twenty minutes. Another rare occurrence in the first period, both teams changed goaltenders in the opening frame.

The Hawks scored five times in the second period, four of them powerplay goals and took the lead 7-5.

In the third period, Joel Kitchen scored his second goal in as many games, on a shorthanded effort as he took a breakout pass from Snyder and danced around the Newmarket netminder and flipped the puck into a wide open cage. Newmarket would score three times in the third, the last one into a wide open Waxers cage in the dying seconds of the game.

The contest concluded with thirteen of the sixteen goals coming on powerplays or shorthanded situations, including four Waxer shorthanded goals, six total on the night (the empty net goal was technically also a shorthanded effort).
