The Waxers fell in game one 6-4 in an extremely close contest that had it's outcome in doubt until the final moments of the game when the Vipers scored an empty net marker. Markham fell prey to some unfortunate breaks including a several "iron shots" but refused to give in.

Markham struck first when Lawne Snyder blasted one home from the point, his fourth of the playoffs from Tom Kotsopoulos and Jason Young at the four minute mark. The Vipers would even the score midway through the period with a powerplay goal.

After Vaughan had taken an early second period lead Kotsopoulos grabbed the puck at centre ice, with the Waxers short two men, and went the distance and tucked the disc behind the Viper's keeper to tie the score at 2-2 at the three minute mark. Midway through the frame the Vipers would go in front on their second powerplay goal of the night but it would take the Waxers only two minutes to answer that one. With Markham on a powerplay Snyder let another blast go from the point to tie the score at 3-3, assists to Jason Fraccaro and Greg Chambers.

Then came perhaps the key point in the contest, with the score still tied at 3-3 and just less than four minutes remaining in the second the Vipers rung the puck off the crossbar (it's in slow motion video on the left side of the page), after some discussion the officials ruled it to be a goal and the Waxers trailed after two 4-3.

Eight minutes into the third the Vipers would up their advantage to 5-3. With six minutes remaining in the period the Vipers instigated an encounter that turned into a mini-brawl. The Waxers went on the ensuing four minute powerplay needing to hit the twine twice. Fraccaro slam dunked a pass from Alex Stoyan. Snyder's pass from the point setup the play, earning him the second assist on the goal and his third point of the evening.

However the Waxers weren't able to get the equalizer and with just 15 seconds remaining on the clock the Vipers scored into the empty Waxer net to conclude the scoring.

An entertaining contest with lots of skating and very good puck movement, excellent goaltending and solid physical play provided a glimpse of what is to come in this series.
