Feb. 18/2000: Rob Mazzuca wrists in a PP goal. 1-0 Waxers!

Feb. 18/2000: Jason Young's PP goal ties the score at 2-2!

Feb. 18/2000: Jason Young wrists home the rebound off of Lawne Snyder's blast to put Markham in front 4-3!

Feb. 18/2000: Alex Stoyan had several huge hits like this one, bone-jarring!

The Waxers struck first when Rob Mazzuca wristed in a shot from the high slot with just over five minutes remaining in the opening period. The powerplay marker, the first of three extra-strength goals the rejuvenated Waxer powerplay would get on the night saw Tom Kotsopoulos and Lawne Snyder draw assists. Jeremy Wenzel was largely untested in that period but he did come up with one very large save when he dove out and covered up a puck that would have allowed the Ranger attacker to break in all alone without a defender on him.

Much like in game four the Rangers used the second period to level things out and scored twice on a powerplay, taking advantage of a Waxers major penalty to score less than two minutes apart in the opening four minutes of the second. It wouldn't take Markham long to answer back as Jason Young scored the first of his two powerplay goals on the night, from Kotsopoulos and Jim Ulcar about a minute and a half following the Ranger early flurry. A minute late the Waxers leaped in front once again when Pat Ferris slid the puck along the ice when he slid the puck into the net from the slot with assists to Ryan Steane and Robert Burrows. The Rangers would persist and scored a third powerplay goal of the period to tie the score at 3-3 after two.

Again, sounding like a broken record, the Waxers quickly retook the lead in the opening moments of the third period, this time just over a minute in when Young scored his second of the night, also a powerplay goal from Snyder and Rob Mazzuca. However the Rangers tied the score at the six minute mark and then netted the winner with just over four minutes remaining.

A frustrating night for the Waxers to be sure, they dominated the playing surface for most of the night and received strong contribution from Alex Stoyan (returning from an injury that kept him out of the previous game and most of game three). The Waxers now face a do or die situation on Saturday night at North York (game six at North York Centennial at 7:00pm) and they can be optimistic that despite the disappointing loss that the continuation of their dominant play will take them to victory. Certainly the Waxers were hurt by the three Ranger powerplay goals in the second period and if there's one thing that could be improved upon it would be their penalty killing which has been excellent all year.
