WORTH
NOTING... |
Malcolm and Bumbaco
continue to play exceptional hockey, expect to see more of the same as we head towards
crunch time. Forsyth played a
strong game in goal, especially if one considers the long time in between starts. He made
several excellent pad saves that illustrate his exceptional ability to move quickly.
The Wildcat's home crowd was buzzing when Mazzuca
was on the ice as he played his typical disciplined, power game all night.
The Waxers effort and work ethic could not
be faulted even though the scoreboard might cause one to assume differently.
"You ain't seen nothing yet" -
this team is going places - big time! |
The Markham Waxers outplayed and outworked the Huntsville Wildcats at Huntsville
Saturday night but a splendid performance by the Wildcat netminder was a significant
reason why the final score was 3-3.
The Waxers pounced in front early in the opening period when Ian Malcolm broke away on a lead
pass from Rob Bumbaco and
netted his team leading 35th goal of the season. It was a shorthanded effort. There would
be no more scoring in the period that saw the Wildcats outshoot the Waxers 11-6.
The Wildcats came storming back in the second period with a pair of goals to take a 2-1
lead. The lead was not to last long however, as Bumbaco scored his 18th of the season
(12th as a Waxer in 17 games) from Brett
Barrer and Malcolm with four minutes remaining in the period. The Waxers held
the edge in play for much of the period but the excellent play of the Wildcat goalkeeper
allowed the Wildcats to stay in the contest.
The Wildcats scored midway through the third period to take the lead at 3-2. The Waxers
had spent much of the period's opening minutes a man short as the result of multiple minor
penalties. Rob Mazzuca scored
with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation time to even things up once again,
this time at 3-3. Alex Stoyan
and Daniel Sisca earned
assists. The Waxers had been pressing many times before that for the tying marker and
finally Mazzuca grabbed a loose puck in the high slot, twirled around and fired a blind
shot right along the ice that beat the Huntsville netminder.
Overtime settled nothing and while the Waxers would have obviously preferred to have a
victory under their belt the tie extended the Waxers unbeaten string to 7 games (5-0-2).
B.J. Forsyth tended the cage
for the Waxers and made several big stops among his 30 saves he made on the night.
The Waxers next game is Friday, February 5th at Centennial Arena when they face the
rival Wexford Raiders in a crucial game that will go a long way in determining where the
Waxers finish in the standings. A victory against the Raiders will pretty much assure the
Waxers of at least a 5th place finish in the very competitive Central Conference barring a
complete collapse which isn't going to happen to this club. EDITOR
