WORTH
NOTING... |
Before the game the Waxers honoured a
member of their prestigious and rich past when they retired the jersey
(#10) of Adam Oates. (more)
Over 1000 fans were on hand
to witness the event and the game that followed
This night also saw the debut of the Waxers mascot, "Boomer"
The Waxers never let themselves have a chance to get
untracked as they spent far too much time in the penalty box.
Without checking it says here that the 5 misconducts
the Waxers took has to be close to a season-high, there were 7 such penalties assessed to
both clubs in total this game.
Lawson played a real solid game in net for
the Waxers, perhaps facing a lot of shots early helped him gain his focus as it does so
often for many netminders.
Kitchen continues to show poise far beyond
his years, he's been playing consistent, disciplined, two-way hockey all year long.
A few Waxers had what could be termed pleasantly as "off-nights",
it shows the strength of the team though that they could still prevail despite that.
"You ain't seen nothing yet" -
this team is going places - big time! |
The Markham Waxers defeated the visiting Durham
Huskies by a 4-2 count. Before the game the sweater of Adam Oates (#10,
with the Waxers in 1980-82) was retired.
Despite the Huskies outshooting the Waxers by a 17-8 count the Waxers lead where it
counted most after 20 minutes. Ian Malcolm
repeated his "two goals in a shift" performance of last Saturday's game when he
struck twice within 48 seconds at around the seven-minute mark. His first was assisted by Rob Mazzuca and the second was
aided by Rob Bumbaco. Those two
goals were Malcolm's 33rd and 34th of the season and he continues to excel and is
justifying the interest that many have shown in his talents. That would be pretty much all
of the offense the Waxers could muster up.
The second period saw the Huskies once again outshoot the Waxers, this time it would be
closer 12-11 and they'd outscore them 2-1. Just over a minute into the period the Huskies
would strike for a powerplay goal to cut the lead to 2-1 and then at the eight-minute mark
would convert again on the powerplay to even things at 2-2. The Waxers finally regained
the lead on Bumbaco's goal with 40 seconds remaining in the period with Malcolm and Brett Barrer drawing helpers.
The third period saw the Waxers outshoot their opponents for the only time (15-13) but
it wouldn't be until the 11-minute mark that Barrer would score his 15th of the year
during a manpower advantage from Lawne
Snyder and Bumbaco to give the Waxers some breathing room.
Tom Lawson earned the victory
in net turning aside 40 of 42 Durham shots.
The Waxers hit the road Saturday to close out the month of January as they take on the
Huntsville Wildcats. EDITOR
