The Waxers returned
from a long layoff (almost two weeks) and scored a well-deserved 2-1 victory over the
visiting Thornhill Rattlers.
WORTH
NOTING... |
This was the lowest scoring
game of the year for both clubs Lawson
was strong in net as he continued his strong play after an exceptional performance in the
All Star Game
Welch showed flashes of something special,
there'll be more to come as he continues to adjust
Tompkins had a couple of great scoring
chances and played his usual "pure hustle - never quit" style of game
Malcolm picked up four minor penalties, only
once where he took an opponent off with him - don't expect to see that too often
Lachapelle continues his strong play, he's
been noticeably better after the Christmas break
The Waxers took 15 penalties and still were
able to come away with the victory. That part wasn't so great, but the effort
was there, and the long layoff needs to be considered. "You ain't seen
nothing yet" - this team is going places - big time! |
The teams skated through the opening 33 minutes before the Waxers would finally break
the ice, however, it was not for lack of trying on the Waxers part nor a shortage of
scoring opportunities. At times the Rattler netminder simply stood on his head and at
other times it seemed that the Waxers couldn't finish what otherwise might have resulted
in a score.
Bryan Lachapelle got
the scoring started when he shot from the left side boards and beat the Rattler netminder
to the far side, earning assists were Chris
Petracco and Lawne Snyder.
The Rattlers would tie it up before the period was complete and the teams began the third
with nothing much decided and the score tied at 1-1.
Just over nine minutes into the final period during a Waxer powerplay, Rob Bumbaco scored his 14th of the
season, the eventual game winner with assists to Snyder and Mike Clarke.
Tom Lawson turned aside 32 of
33 shots he faced to earn the victory, including 26 saves in the final two periods alone.
The Waxers next game is Saturday night as they host a rare Saturday evening contest at
Centennial Arena against the Couchiching Terriers. EDITOR
