The Waxers came back from
a second period deficit and earned a hard-fought 4-4 tie against arch-rival Wexford
Raiders at Scarborough Arena Sunday night. The Waxers then took that comeback momentum (along
with the very vocal cheering section that formed beside the player's bench) and
totally dominated the overtime session but were unable to solve the Wexford netminder. Not
a perfect game but the effort was there once again and when that happens this team's not
going to lose too many games. The Waxers started quickly again (for the third
straight game) as they put pressure on the Wexford goal right from the opening whistle and
finally after 150 seconds Brett Barrer
flipped one high over the Raider netminder on a rebound from an Ian Malcolm effort, Rob Bumbaco
picked up the other assist.
WORTH
NOTING... |
Markham's solid effort is getting the
attention of opposing teams as they look over their shoulders. However, last night the loud
young cheering section had Raider supporters up in arms, to no avail, the
cheering kept going until the final whistle.
Lawson may not have his entire "A"
game back, but when you turn aside 50 of 54 shots and help your team pick up 5 out of six
points it's enough to make opposing shooters cringe
Barrer had an unbelievable chance to win the
game in overtime...give the Raider netminder credit but it shows again that great effort
brings with it rewards
Sisca's two assists give him five assists
and six points in his past two games as the 1983-born centre has been a "force"
all year for the Waxers
The Waxers have turned the corner and everyone's happy with
the recovery - It says here that "you ain't seen nothing yet" -
this team is going places - big time! |
Just over four minutes later Rob Bumbaco
scored his first of two on the night on a breakaway as he was able to utilize his blazing
speed to take a feed from Alex Stoyan
from behind centre and leave all defenders laying in his dust, Malcolm picked up the
second assist on that effort. The Raiders bounced back however taking advantage of man
advantage situations and tied the score at 2-2 with a pair of powerplay markers. With less
than a minute remaining in the opening frame David
Colucci kept on rolling when he scored his 15th goal of the season (9th as a
Waxer since arriving a short time ago), Mike
Clarke and Daniel Sisca
picked up helpers. Somehow the Raiders managed to outshoot the Waxers 22-10 but if you
asked any observer you'd be hard pressed to find someone who'd have guessed the shot
totals that resulted.
The second period saw the Raiders score two unanswered scores to take the lead in the
contest for the first time at 4-3. In general it would be fair to say that the Waxers have
played better periods than that. However, to the Waxers credit, and a sign of a good
hockey club is the ability to bounce back and regroup after a minor setback and the Waxers
did just that.
Markham finally tied the score with just over five minutes remaining in the regulation
on Bumbaco's second of the night from Malcolm and Sisca and to the delight of the young
but very loud cheering section the game was back to square one. Late in the period a
couple of excellent defensive plays, in particular a real solid effort by rookie Jimmy Ball alone facing a racing
Raider attacker negated that scoring opportunity as Ball smartly played the skater.
Overtime settled nothing, however, the Waxers dominated play almost entirely save for
one dangerous Wexford rush that resulted in a good scoring chance for the Raiders but
netminder Tom Lawson made a
fantastic pad save to preserve the tie. EDITOR
