The Waxers downed the
Newmarket Hurricanes at Newmarket on Thursday night with what can be simply described as
the result of a good old fashioned hard work. An honest and disciplined work ethic for
basically the entire contest resulted in a victory that was well deserved. The net result
(no pun intended) was a convincing 7-5 decision for the men in blue and white. The
Waxers jumped on the scoreboard first as Kevin
Tompkins converted from Jimmy
Ball and Bryan Lachapelle
seven minutes into the contest. The Hurricanes stormed back with two goals of their own,
the latter a powerplay effort to take a 2-1 lead before Daniel Sisca finished off a play
from David Colucci and Ball.
Then, 34 seconds later, Rob Mazzuca
hammered one home from Sisca and Ball to put the Waxers into the lead once again, 3-2.
Save for the midway mark of the period when the Canes struck for a PP marker the Waxers
dominated the play during this period as their hustle earned them the first period lead.
WORTH
NOTING... |
Markham's seven-goal outburst was
signficant since there were seven different goal scorers, a reflection of
the complete team effort Lawson
came up big when he had to, especially in the third
Ball picked up assists on the first three
goals
Tompkins was banging, passing, scoring, what
else could a coach ask for

The second period was all Markham once again as the Waxers kept pouring it on and stuck
to the game plan and continued to work hard. Four minutes into the middle frame Alex Stoyan scored on a wrist shot
through traffic from the point, Bryan
Lachapelle and Tompkins earned assists. Just over three minutes later it was
Lachapelle's turn as he converted from Tompkins and Locky Gelinas and the Waxers had
a commanding 5-2 lead. Less than a minute later after the Hurricanes changed goalkeepers,
David Colucci scored what would
end up being the game winner from Mike
Clarke and Sisca. The period ended with the Waxers up 6-3 as Newmarket scored
on the powerplay late in the period.
The final frame went quickly in Markham's direction when Brett Barrer converted on a
powerplay from Clarke and Stoyan to give the Waxers a 7-3 edge. The Hurricanes continued
to press and to their credit they never gave up and they hammered netminder Tom Lawson with 24 shots in the
that period, scoring twice including their third powerplay goal of the night.
A solid effort in goal by Lawson as he turned aside 43 of 48 shots. The coaching staff
had to be pleased by the result, but more importantly the effort as the Waxers easily
"outchanced" the Hurricanes and until the score hit 7-3 this was Markham's game
in every aspect. EDITOR
