StreetTalk with Mike Hayakawa

SLOW START HURTS WAXERS
By Mike Hayakawa [Sports Editor Markham Economist and Sun]
Take away the first period of Monday's Provincial Junior A Hockey League contest against the visiting Collingwood Blues and the Markham Waxers might have earned a victory.

THANKS FROM AFAR FOR LOCAL SPORTS COVERAGE

Our son, Dan Britt, has played for the Markham Waxers Junior A team for the past two years.

It has been difficult keeping track of how he and the team have been doing on a regular basis; we live about 600 miles away in the Philadelphia area.

With his recent trade to Newmarket, we wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how much we have appreciated being able to "stay on top" of the team through your articles and the Waxers website.

Unfortunately for the Waxers, hockey games last 60 minutes in duration and that was where the problem took place.

The Central Conference-leading Blues erupted for three first-period goals and never looked back as they skated away with a 4-1 win over the Waxers.

"We don't start well," conceded Waxers' general manager Larry Herrington. "We've tried a variety of things to overcome that situation. We recognize it and we have to do something about it."

The Blues delivered the lone goal of the second period before Bryan Lachapelle lit the lamp in the final period to account for the lone Waxers' goal.

Apart from the disasterous opening frame, Herrington felt his club played well in the final 40 minutes. Only a strong effort by Blues' goalie Jonathon Forest prevented the Waxers from cutting into their deficit.

Another positive that Herrington saw was the return of goalkeeper Tom Lawson. The first-year goalie was put to work immediately and played well considering the layoff he had.

"He stoned them a number of times in the second and third period," Herrington said of his goalies' performance. "Tommy is an important part of the puzzle and we're thrilled to have him back."

With three goalies now in the fold, the Waxers are expected to drop one from the rsoter before Monday's trading deadline.
