Currently a member of the Washington Capitals, Oates played with the
Waxers for three consecutive seasons starting in 1979-80.
Oates
also spent time in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, St. Louis Blues and
Detroit Red Wings.
Among his teammates with the Waxers included Steve Thomas,
now a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Oates will be the third uniform number retired. The other two included
Thomas, who wore number 16 and Ron Wilson, 20.
