WAXERS CAPTURE FIRST
ANNUAL ST MICHAEL'S SHOOTOUT
In the aptly named "Shootout" Final,
the Markham Waxers outlasted the host St Michael's Buzzers by a 9-5 score
to win the inaugural event. Led by a Ben
Cottreau hat trick, the Waxers had intermission leads of 3-0 and
6-2. Also scoring for the Waxers were Stephen
Wong, Riley Hill, Ryan
Olidis, BJ Quinto, Nathaniel
Brooks and Josh Jacobs. The Waxers placed three players
on the Tournament All-Star Team: Anthony
Guadagnolo, Olidis and Cottreau. [recap].
WAXERS WIN FIRST GAME OF
THE SHOOTOUT SERIES
Playing the first ever game of the St
Michael's Shootout Series, the Markham Waxers won their first preseason
game when they doubled up their close neighbour Stouffville by a 6-3
count. Player-of-the-Game Derrell Levy lead the way with one
goal and one assist while Josh Jacobs, Ben
Cottreau, Albert Ferrante, Nathaniel
Brooks and Ryan Olidis had the
other goals. Anthony
Guadagnolo earned the victory which places the Waxers in to the Final
Saturday at 7:00 pm versus the winner of St Michael's and
Georgetown. [recap to come].
WAXERS MAKE SOME CHANGES
TO STAFF
The Markham Waxers are pleased to announce the
appointment of two new staff members for the upcoming season. Taking
over the Athletic Therapist role from Phil Lamont, is another
graduate of York University's Athletic Trainer programme, Rose Capone.
Rose has been heavily involved with the Varsity teams at York, including
being Head Therapist for the York Football squad, and works at Bally's
Fitness as a Personal Trainer. Lamont had earlier resigned from the
position to be able to spend more time at home as his wife recently gave
birth to their second child. The second staff position to change
hands is that of Strength and Conditioning coach. Rob
Pagliaro, who held the position last season, also left the team for
family reasons and has been replaced by Anthony Belza.
Anthony is one of the oldest Herrington Alumni, having played for Coach
Herrington's first Junior A team in Thornhill, where Anthony was also
Coach Herrington's first Captain. After moving on to Laurier
University, Anthony has spent the past 4 years playing professionally in
the ECHL, UHL and AHL. Recently retired, Anthony has joined forces
with the Waxers to run dryland training sessions and assist on-ice during
practices. The Waxers welcome Rose and Anthony to the organization
and wish to extend our sincerest thanks to Rob and Phil for a job well
done the past year.
WAXERS ADD THREE MORE TO
THE LINEUP
The Markham Waxers have added three more
players to the roster - one via trade and two first year Rookies.
Markham acquired rugged and hard working winger Josh Jacobs from
the Thornhill Rattlers (now called the Major Islanders) to add
another 1985 born veteran up front. The Waxers then signed left winger B.J.
Quinto, who last played for the St Michael's High School squad, and
has impressed thus far with his work ethic. Finally, Chris Korte
has been added to the rearguard from the Waxers Midget AA team.
Korte, is a 6' 4" left shot, born in 1986, and has made the jump from
AA to Junior A after an head turning camp this summer. The Waxers
squad is now almost set for the season as the Waxers wait for word on
players still at OHL camps. Look for the final roster and regular
season schedule to be posted in the coming days
WAXERS GET ONE GOAL CLOSER
BUT HAVE SAME RESULT
The Markham Waxers worked extremely hard all
night in their second of two preseason games with the Newmarket Hurricanes
but came away on the wrong end of a 5-4 score. The Waxers now have a
week off before their final two preseason games, Friday and Saturday when
they take part in the St Michael's Shootout. [recap]
PRESEASON STARTS WITH A
DEFEAT
The Markham Waxers did not start the preseason
the way the wanted as they spotted the visiting Newmarket Hurricanes leads
of 4-0 and 5-1 after 40 minutes. Playing their best period of the
night, Markham scored twice in the third to make the final 5-3 in their
first of two with the Hurricanes this week. [recap]
ROSTER STARTS TO TAKE
SHAPE WITH FOUR ADDITIONS
The Markham Waxers have been
busy solidifying their roster for next year and are pleased to announce
four additions to the team for the upcoming season. In two
separate transactions, the Waxers picked up two veteran players from
Division rivals North York and Ajax. Derrell Levy, a
Markham resident and Brother Andre student, was acquired from the North
York Rangers. The 1984 born speedster is a right handed forward who last
year collected 4 goals and 8 assists in his first year in the league.
Shortly after, the Waxers shored up their goaltending when they acquired
Greg van't Hof from the Ajax Axemen. Like Levy, a one year
veteran and born in 1984, last year van't Hof saw action in 13 games for
the Axemen posting a goals against average of 4.52. The Waxers
have also added two graduates from their Midget Waxers to the squad:
forward Joel Lenius and defenseman Darryl Flowers.
Lenius is a 1986 born forward who played in the past with current Waxers
Ryan Olidis, Rainor Guminny and David Lyall. Flowers has played
the past two seasons with the Midget team and was brought up by the
Waxers during the playoffs last season seeing time against Wellington in
the South-East Conference Finals.
