StreetTalk with Mike Hayakawa

..FROM THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
NOVEMBER 20, 2002

For Markham Waxers head coach Russ Herrington, his worst fear came to fruition when his team travelled to Oshawa on Tuesday for its Provincial Junior A Hockey League game against the Legionaires.

Sensing that his club didnąt give a consistent 60-minute effort in their two weekend victories over the Thornhill Rattlers and Pickering Panthers, Herrington warned his charges they would have to do so against a stronger Legionaires' entry. The Waxers failed to take the Coach's advice to heart and dropped a 7-4 decision to the Legionaires.

"We stunk," said Herrington bluntly. "We didn't play very well in every aspect of the game. It was pure and simple our worst game of the year."

"Not playing a full 60 minutes catches up to you and in our division you can't show up and play parts of games, especially against a team that works as hard as Oshawa does."

Making the effort even more disappointing to the Waxers, who occupy second place in the south division, was their failure to take advantage of an opportunity to gain ground on the first-place Wexford Raiders.

As well, the loss ended a 12-game streak by the Waxers in which they failed to gain a point since their 5-2 loss to the Stouffville Spirit back on Oct. 11.

"Maybe we were due for a stinker, but the timing of it was bad," said Herrington.

Anthony Guadagnolo started the game in net for the Waxers before giving way to Kevin Sit when the Legionaires took a 3-1 lead early in the second period.

Now 15-5-4-1 on the season, the Waxers will have a chance to make amends against the Legionaires when they host them tomorrow at Centennial Arena at 8 p.m. On Sunday, the Waxers will play in Ajax at 3 p.m.
