OCTOBER 2002

..FROM THE DESK OF MIKE HAYAKAWA..
OCTOBER 30, 2002

In most instances claiming three of a possible four points would be deemed a satisfactory accomplishment for any hockey team. But in the case of the Markham Waxers, earning three points after playing two Provincial Junior A Hockey League contests last Friday and Monday, wasnąt acceptable. [article]

WAXERS RECOVER IN DYING MOMENTS TO SALVAGE POINT AFTER LOSING LEAD EARLIER IN CONTEST
The Vipers hosted the Waxers for the first half of a home-and-home series on Monday night (re-match is at Markham on Friday) and Vaughan worked hard to erase an early deficit before losing the lead themselves in the final minute of play. MARKHAM ROLLS OVER THE HURRICANES
Markham returned home after a hard-fought win in Collingwood to face the Newmarket Hurricanes and it didn't take long before the Newmarket squad probably thought they were victims of a storm as the Waxers opened the scoring at the 14-second mark and never looked back en route to a 7-1 win. Mark Menonte led the well-balanced Markham attack with a four-point night. Next up for the Waxers is the opening round of a set of two back-to-back games with the Vipers starting Monday evening at Vaughan. [recap]

COTTREAU HAT TRICK POWERS MARKHAM PAST RAIDERS
Markham and Wexford faced off for the second time this year, and first in Scarborough, and the Waxers avenged their earlier loss with a 7-3 victory.  Ben Cottreau led the way with a hat trick and the Waxers scored 6 goals in the final 20 minutes en route to the win. [recap]

Anthony Guadagnolo was given a workout as the Waxers were less than stellar defensively.WHEN A WIN IS A WIN
Markham and Ajax faced for the first time this season and the Waxers delivered less than a spectacular performance but did enough to win by a 5-2 count. An exciting mix of fast end-to-end hockey for stretches early in the contest deteriorated into a sloppy, lackluster contest. [recap]

SHORTHANDED WAXERS TIE UP THE COUCH
Markham, playing with 12 regulars and 4 call-ups, put in an inspired effort Sunday afternoon to earn a 2-2 tie with Couchiching.  Connor Treacy (from the Waxers Midgets) and Juaquin Chavira scored the Waxer goals.  [recap]

One of the few bright spots for the Waxers on this dreary night was the play of Liam Bowen.WAXERS SERVE UP AN EARLY TURKEY
Long time rivals Stouffville and Markham faced off for the first of only two meetings this year at Markham Centennial and the outcome was a humiliating 5-2 loss to the visitors. Liam Bowen and Mark Menonte provided the Waxer goals on a night that they'd best forget before facing Couchiching on Sunday. [recap]

OCTOBER 9, 2002

When Markham Waxers right winger Nathaniel Brooks took to the ice for last Friday's Provincial Junior A Hockey League game against the Oshawa Legionaires he decided to loosen his hold of the stick. The move paid big dividends for the 16-year-old Markham resident as he notched not only his first junior A goal, but his second and third of the night to help the Waxers double the count on the Legionaires 8-4 at Centennial Arena. WAXERS COMPLETE WEEKEND SWEEP WITH SUNDAY WIN
