HERRINGTON PUPIL ON THE
VERGE OF SOMETHING BIG
Saturday June 24, 2000 was a big day in the life of Raffi Torres, a
walk-on with the Thornhill franchise three years ago. Coach Russ Herrington
and GM Larry Herrington
saw talent (the Herringtons were mainstays of the Thornhill franchise for
many years) and worked with the hard-working left winger throughout the
season and Raffi rewarded their faith in him with a steady season that
culminated in an outstanding playoff performance. Brampton (OHL)
"finally" drafted the tough-nosed but clean winger in the sixth
round and now he's steps from the "show". The New York Islanders
wasted no time in selecting Torres with the fifth overall selection (he
was only one of two GTA players drafted in the first 95 picks, Dom Moore
was selected 95th). More exciting things are to come as Raffi was invited
to tryout for the Canadian National Junior squad and it would be somewhat
of a surprise if he doesn't make that squad. Quite an example of perseverance
and a living example of what hard work will accomplish. Congrats to the
Herringtons and Raffi Torres and family, there's no doubt many fine days
lie ahead for the Torres'.
WAXERS CONTINUE TO ADD
LOCAL TALENT
As mentioned in previous posts, the Waxers are excited at the
opportunities to add hometown talent to the 2000-2001 squad. The Waxers
are pleased to announce that we have added two more Markham residents as
Steve Kelly and Kevin Cribari have accepted commitments from the coaching
staff for the upcoming season. [story]

WAXERS
TO MISS OUTGOING ASSISTANT COACH
It is a sad day for the Markham Waxers, having received the resignation
notice from goaltending specialist Jeff
Laceby. A valued member of the staff in Markham for the past two
seasons, and last season completed his fourth term of service with the
Coach Russ Herrington
and GM Larry Herrington.

MARKHAM'S SEASON
CONCLUDES
The Vaughan Vipers continued to make good use of
their horse shoes and stole a game from the Waxers, this time by a 5-2
count in another contest that had the scoreboard paint a rather inaccurate
picture. The Waxers are full marks for their efforts although that
consolation prize rests uncomfortably at the moment. The group of guys on
this team were the best bunch that I've ever been associated with in my
few years of direct involvement. [recap]
WAXERS DOMINATE MUCH OF
THE CONTEST BUT BAD LUCK PLAYS A PART IN LOSS
Markham and Vaughan played game four of their
division semi-finals as the friendly series finally continued after a
layoff that began after the Waxers dominant victory on Monday night. This
was a night when nothing would go the Waxers way and despite outplaying
the visitors for much of the contest, particularly in the opening frame
the boys in blue and white fell 6-0. Game five goes in Vaughan on Saturday
night (Mar. 4) @ 6:00pm. [recap]
